• The HC-SR501 PIR Motion Detector is one of the easiest motion sensors to use on the market, and fully compatible with Arduino. Power it up and wait about 5 seconds for initialization. After this period, if anything moves within its reading range, the output pin goes to a logic high level. This output level is 3.3V, so it can be easily understood by an Arduino board in a digital reading.

• The sensor has two potentiometers on the back. One selects how long the output pin stays active when the sensor "sees" movement. This time can range from 5 seconds to 2.5 minutes. For use with Arduino, you can keep it at 5 seconds. The other potentiometer adjusts the maximum reading distance, which can range nominally from 3 meters to 7 meters. The opening angle is approximately 120°.
